Crewe
Back to 'Things To See & Do'
Crewe is justly famous for railways and top-quality cars - and has unjustly become the butt of too many second-rate jokes! It's full of character and well worth a visit.
Crewe Hall is a lovely building, and a very popular wedding venue - it dates from 1636, and was a family home until the early 20th century, when it was sold to the Duchy of Lancaster. Toward the end of the century, it became the headquarters of the Wellcome Foundation, before being turned into a hotel. Now part of the QHotels Group, it is a very popular wedding venue. For anyone attending a wedding, Coole Hall Farm B&B is an excellent place to stay - we're only half an hour away on reliable roads. We can arrange a taxi for you - just let us know when you book.
Queen's Park is one of the finest Victorian parks in the country. It was opened in 1887 (chosen to celebrate Victoria's Jubilee), and soon became very popular with local people. Large and oval-shaped, it has a traditional bandstand and well-tended flower displays. Peaceful paths wind down to the lake, where well-fed ducks dabble happily. A local story has it that the park was built by a railway company to prevent rivals extending their network - but historians have shown that the London & North Western Railway gave the land freely for the benefit of the town.
Railways - no mention of Crewe would be complete without the railways! Crewe Heritage Centre is a great museum all about Crewe and the rail industry - it's open at weekends and Bank Holidays. And if you're wondering what happened to the original 'tilting train', wonder no more - it's sitting quietly outside the museum!
