Houses & Stately Homes
Cheshire has a wealth of wonderful houses to visit. The wealth that was accrued by the early owners of agricultural and industrial businesses was often devoted to building large and impressive houses.
- Lyme Park - lovely house in large area of parkland (and the venue for BBC's "Pride and Prejudice")
- Dunham Massey - Georgian house in large deer park, with excellent gardens (including wonderful winter garden)
- Tatton Park - 19th century house, with stunning gardens and 1,000 acre deer park. Don't miss the large walled garden and farm shop!
Shropshire -
- Attingham Park - 18th century mansion with walled garden and parkland, recently restored and still in the process of being 'uncovered'. Very close to the River Severn with a lovely old stone bridge at Atcham.
Wales has several large houses, which are all within a short drive of Coole Hall Farm -
- Erddig - fascinating house built with coal money. Unique set of portraits of the below-stairs staff!
- Chirk Castle - magnificent 14th century castle set in parkland. This is a proper castle! - the last of Edward I's attempts to subdue the Welsh people, it boasts views across the Cheshire plain.
